The first steps in applying the Habit Reframe Method are simple.

First, you’ll jot down some quick ideas about your goals and aspirations. That’s your North Star. From there, Step 2 will be to establish what you already wish you were doing—or not doing—on a daily basis. These are the rules and commitments, as guided by your North Star.

I'll walk you through the process.

Think of your North Star as the long-term values, identities, and ambitions you’re aiming to grow into. It defines what an awesome life looks like for you. It’s what you want to aim for—the guiding light you’ll rely on when life gets messy.

Instructions

  1. Scroll to the bottom of this page and open the “Examples” section (click the little triangle) to get a sense of what you’re aiming to produce.
  2. Click the “Add Category” button.
  3. Enter your first category (feel free to copy-paste from the examples).
  4. Add a few bullet points for goals and values.
  5. Repeat steps 2–4 for as many categories as you like (I suggest sticking to two or three).

Don't overthink any of this…

Your job is to jot down your goals without worrying about what they “should” be, or how they should be structured or articulated. Just go with what’s already bouncing around in your head.

If you’re really wanting some instructions (and I’m no expert on goal-setting, btw), keep it simple. Try wording goals clearly, and use measurable terms whenever you can (e.g. “increase income by 50%” instead of “make more money”), aiming for a 6- to 12-month horizon.

Your goals can (and should) also be big, ambitious, or even “unrealistic.” Remember: this is your North Star—something far out to aim for, fully understanding that actually getting there might be long, difficult, or even unlikely.
